Chicago Open Streets
This year's Open Streets event will cover 8 miles of some of the most beautiful boulevards in Chicago, from 8.30am to 2pm on August 1st. That means that for half the day you'll be able to ride the broad, leafy boulevards from Logan Square to Little Village with hundreds of other cyclists AND NO CARS.
There are lots of side events happening along the route, so get out there and ride your bike. It's free, and all thanks to the hard work of the people at the Active Transportation Alliance.
Details here.

Bicycle Film Festival Chicago
The programme for Chicago's Bicycle Film Festival this year is ridiculous! There's so much good stuff going on, like outdoor movies, tons of parties (including the massive block party), a scavenger hunt, GoldSprints, trick comps, and of course the full compliment of bike movies. I wish I could go! Tickets will be available soon here. More details here.
Ireland Invented Bike Polo
There was an article on bike polo in The Irish Times yesterday, and it mentioned that an Irishman, Richard J McCready, invented bike polo in 1891. Sure didn't we invent everything good? Apparently bike polo is making a bit of a comeback at home, and there's even a bike polo association now. Check out the article here and the association here.

Meadowbank
Saw a couple of great photos by Mike Bascombe of Meadowbank velodrome in Edinburgh over on Tracko the other day. Meadowbank is a historic 250m track, built in 1985 for the Commonwealth Games, and is where track legends like Chris Hoy and Craig MacLean started out. Unfortunately, Edinburgh Council voted to tear down the track in 2006, and people have been campaigning against the demolition since then. Check out the campaign to save Meadowbank, and some great clips of a young Hoy riding the boards, here, and check out more of Mike's photos here.

Not Usual Velodrome Behaviour
Northbrook hosted some very strange entertainment for the racers at the Allvoi Cup on Saturday. The photo is by Ed White. Check out more of Ed's photos here.
Keirin Berlin Are Famous in Russia
Here's a video from Russian TV about the recent crackdown on brakeless track bikes in Berlin. At least, I think that's what it's about. My literary Russian is excellent, but my spoken Russian is a little rusty. Mort from Keirin Berlin is featured, but, again, I have no idea what he's saying. Probably something like "Yes, track bikes are great and Hipster Nascar is the best blog in the world, ever." Can't argue with the man there...
More Shirts
Teepay is a new t-shirt voting/printing site, similar to threadless, launched by British clothing line Howies. They sent me a couple of images of bike related shirts up for voting now, one of which is this one, the famous pedal/clip/doubles shirt by superprecise over on the LondonFGSS board. Check out the shirt here.
cassette
Cassette is a new cycling t-shirt line produced by Mike from Gage&DeSoto and Kaiko from pedal-strike. Check out their designs here.

DERAILEDUK IS BACK!
Thank jaysus! I missed reading it, so I hope it's back for good, even if it only comes out once every six months. If you like your pro cycling coverage on the iconoclastic side, check out DerailedUK here.
42Below Goldsprints - Race Night 2
The second night of 42Below Goldsprints in Chicago is happening at Victory Liquors, 2619 N. Halsted, on Saturday, July 18th, at 10pm. It's run by the OpenSprints crew, so head along and give Evan some abuse on my behalf. He loves it!

OpenSprints at the Elgin Classic
The crew from OpenSprints will be running some roller races at the Elgin Classic this Sunday, July 12th, 3pm, at the Douglas Street Bar and Grill. Whether you race the Classic or not, head over to the OpenSprints and take out some aggression on the rollers.

First Day in the Mountains
From Barcelona to Andorra, today is the first mountain stage in this year's Tour. Who's going to attack first? And how will my fantasy TdF team, made up exclusively of sprinters, fare? Poorly, I'm guessing. If you're trying to find live feeds of the action, CyclingFans is your best bet.

How to Plan a Bike Pub Crawl
Ira over at the excellent Being Totally Sweet in Chicago has put together a great list of the seven steps you need to plan and run a successful bike pub crawl. Check it out here.

Feiyue Bike
Feiyue, a Sino-French (that means Chinese-French, you peons) sneaker brand have put together a few nice fixed-gear bikes to showcase their brand. Why? Because they love bikes! Hey, who doesn't? Did you hear you can buy fixed-gear bikes at Urban Outfitters now? It's the scandal of the century. Anyway, maybe I'm being cynical, but I think the people at Feiyue just wanted to get their brand some cheap attention. It worked, I suppose. I mean, I'd certainly never heard of them before, but now they've put their sticker on a few top tubes, damn, I'm all over their stuff!

42Below Goldsprints
To celebrate the arrival in Chicago of the 42 cyclists that are currently riding the US from coast-to-coast, 42Below is hosting a massive sprints party in Moonshine, 1824 W. Division, on Wednesday, July 8th. Check out all the details of the 42Ride here.
Oh, and, the sprints at Moonshine will be run by the excellent crew behind the OpenSprints system, so a good time is guaranteed.
FIAC Women's Six Day National Championships

Le Tour
Starts on Saturday! Who's going to win? My money's on Contador. He'll put time into his GC rivals in the TTs and defend his lead in the mountains. The absence of race radios on a couple of the flat stages should make for some interesting breakaways, and, of course, Lance is back. Can't wait!
If anyone is interested, I set up a group over on the Versus Tour de France fantasy league. Register, pick your team, and join the Hipster Nascar group. Password: track. Besides the prizes Versus is giving the overall winners of its competition, I might offer a small prize to whoever wins the Hipster Nascar group.

Chicago Couriers Union BBQ
Just got an email about this. The Chicago Couriers Union is putting on a fund-raising picnic for the Ryan Boudreau Memorial Fund tomorrow, July 3rd, in historic Union Park. Everyone, including non-messengers, is welcome. There will be food, drinks, kickball and mini-bike races. I know I say this all the time, but if you're in Chicago you should definitely go to this, because the grand prize for the mini-bike races is $200 worth of tattoo work! Plus, you'll be showing solidarity with a hard working union. Head over to Union Park tomorrow at 5pm.
Tour De Water Tower
I know I've said this before, but damn, there are always a lot of bike events happening in Seattle. Tour de Water Tower Guerilla Time Trial - July 12th - Seattle, WA - Details here.
Team Pegasus on Urban Velo
Sean from Team Pegasus (and the star of Tracko's old splash page, riding a bowl on his disk wheeled Concept for a laugh) appears on the Urban Velo page right now, killing it up at the track. Brad was in town covering the Team Beer'd Ghetto Cross race, and found the time to head up to Northbrook and take some photos of the action. Check it out here.
