Yojimbo's Track Cats News

Although the sport of track racing flourishes in other areas of the country and around the world where velodromes exist, only a handful of Chicago youth are involved. Yojimbo's Track Cats aims to change that by offering a rich athletic program for Chicago high-school students that removes barriers to entry by providing everything needed to participate in track cycling- including equipment, transportation and skills training.

Brean Shea dropped me an email about some recent developments. "Vision Quest generously donated to the returning Track Cats a full eight-week strength building training course using their coaches, computrainers, and facilities. This type of off-season training will certainly give the Cats a great start to a promising season. The quality of the training is fantastic.

Some of the Track Cats plan on racing at Supercrit and Hillsboro. We have been able to put a few road bikes together so they can train, and some of them have gotten interested in road racing. I'm pretty excited about this."

Yojimbo's Track Cats is a great program. It gets kids into track racing who might never have know about the sport, and supports them in every way possible. Track racing can be expensive, though, so the Track Cats need your help. The program is a registered charity and runs mostly off donations. Please go HERE to learn more and to support the program.

Thanks Simon for writing about the Track Cats -- a truly great program run by volunteers who love the sport and are doing tremendous things for the sport of track racing, and bike racing in general, in the Chicago area. How many of us wish we had gotten into the sport at a younger age? I know I wish I had. Well, here's a program that is giving local kids the chance to experience the awesome sport of cycling. And they definitely need our help since unfortunately money, frames and wheels don't grow on trees (if only).

Hats off to the Track Cats and here's to another successful season!

The best part is that these kids will be kicking my ass when I start track racing this summer at the ripe age of 24. Its going to be embarrassing...
