Exactly 36 years ago, on the 25th of October, 1972, Eddy Merckx set a world hour record of 49.431km in a velodrome in Mexico City. That remains an impressive distance. Chapeau!

Incidentally, when Chris Boardman did another attempt on the hour record using a standard track bike, ala Mr Merckx, he only beat it by a few hundred meters, which makes it all the more impressive i think.
