Sturmey-Archer Fixed 3 Speed

I got the chance to check out Sturmey-Archer's new 3-speed fixed drive train. Pretty cool stuff. Sheldon would definitely be into it. I think a lot of people would agree that it kind of takes away from the simplicity that makes riding fixed so enjoyable to begin with, but it definitely will make sense from some- especially those living in hilly terrain.

Naturally, they will come in all the standard anodized colors.

Shifting is controlled with a single lever that can be used as either a bar-end shifter (above) or as a downtube shifter (below as shown on a custom Retrotec).

now if they'd only release details on how to go about buying one. i know there are a number of bikes that will feature the S3X in the coming year but i've seen no details on where to get one by itself.

All of the distributors that currently carry S-A products will have them by late winter/early spring

Yep...I'm totally going to build a retro-English style roadie with one of these.

I wonder if S-A has revised their hub since they sent it out to some dealers for testing, or if they have just anodized it in pretty colors. My ex-boyfriend (Gregg, shop manager at Aaron's in Seattle) got to test one of the fixie 3-speed hubs a few months ago and wrote them a review tearing them a new one. Evidently the hub is crap, if you like to ride a fixed gear like a fixed gear. Maybe they've fixed it, but he had lots of problems with slippage and phantom shifts etc.

Put a little S-A bling on my hipster cargo bike. Oooo...I hope it comes in pink.
